H3 - Glandular epithelia Flashcards
Describe the process of endocytosis
the membrane invaginate and fuses around the extracellular material forming a endosome
What is phagocytosis?
bacteria is engulfed by phagosome that binds to lysosome forming phagolysosome and is the digested
What gland secrets products at the basal end of the cell and distributes them to the vascular system?
endocrine
What are the features of endocrine glands>
- no ducts
- contain cappilaries and vascular space
What do exocrine glands do?
they secrete products to the apical end where they are secreted into a lumen, duct or body surface
How can exocrine glands be classified?
- duct morphology
- arrangement
- number of secretory cells
- type of product
- mechanism of release
Describe the merocrine mechanism and what are the products?
vesicles merge with the membrane and products are releases by exocytosis
products are usually proteins
What is the mechanism which membrane bound vesicles are pinched off at the apex into extracellular space?
apocrine
What are the two mechanisms which products are usually lipids?
apocrine and holocrine
What is the vesicular transport where whole cells are released from epithelium and disintegrate releasing products?
holocrine
What is a residual body?
reminants of digestion that remain in the cell after phagocytosis
What cells help expel excretions from contracting glands?
myoepithelial cells
