Gross Pathology of Cattle- Nervous Flashcards
Causes of hydranencephaly (including gestation window)
75-125 days
Bluetongue virus (orbivirus)
Rift Valley fever virus (bunyavirus)
Pestivirus- BVD (less severe lesions)
Cause of cerebellar hypoplasia (including gestation window)
125-160 days
In adults- Bovine pestivirus (BVD)
In young animals- parvovirus
Gross lesions: thin gyri, deep sulci, inapparent white matter (hypomyelinosis)
Beta mannosidosis in Salers calves
Cause of encephalitis in calves
Coliforms
Traumatic dehorning
What is cerebellar coning due to? Cause?
Swelling of brain; TEM (histophilus somni)
Cause of suppurative otitis?
Mycoplasma bovis
Gross lesions with rhomboencephalitic Listeria
Pinpoint hemorrhages and necrosis of brainstem
Morph: necrohemorrhagic and suppurative rhomboencephalitis
What causes yellow lesions in the brain?
Mycobacterium bovis
Cause of pink brain and morph?
Babesia bovis; cerebral congestion
What is polioencephalomalacia?
Malacia and hemorrhage in the grey matter
What are causes of polioencephalomalacia?
Thiaminase
Thiamine deficiency (bracken fern binds thiamine)
High sulfur diet (cleaves thiamine)
Lead toxicity
Bovine herpesvirus type 5 (not technically PEM, but causes hemorrhage and necrosis of grey matter in deeper tissues)
Neoplasia in the brachial plexus
Nerve sheath tumor
Lymphoma
Cause of corneal ulcers
Moraxella bovis
