Gross Pathology of Cattle- Musculoskeletal Flashcards
Number one cause of arthrogryposis (folded legs)
Viral- bunyavirus, infection of spinal cord
Pathogenesis of arthrogryposis
Unable to move hindlegs in utero
Gross abnormalities: abnormal jaw, abdominoschisis, back legs flipped over head
Schistosoma reflexus
Gross findings: Two eyes fused into single orbit, no nose, brachygnathism
Cause?
Verratrum californicum- Toxins cyclopamine, cyclopasine, jervine
Gross lesion: Brown discoloration of bone and kidney, teeth fluoresce
Congenital erythropoietic porphyria
Pathogenesis of congential erythropoietic porphyria
Deficiency of uroporphyrinogen-3 cosynthetase–>type 2 photosensitization (aberrent endogenous pigment synthesis)–>high levels of porphyrins in blood
Gross lesions with septic arthritis
Fibrin in joint, fibrous connective tissue around joint, fibrinopurulent material
Gross lesions with Mycoplasma bovis? (other than lungs)
Chronic, fibrinosuppurative arthritis
Systems affected by Mycoplasma bovis
Lungs, joints, inner and middle ear, reproductive tract
Gross morph with lumpy jaw
Granulomatous and proliferative maxillary osteomyelitis
Cause of granulomatous and proliferative maxillary osteomyelitis
Actinomyces bovis
Cause of wooden tongue
Actinobacillus ligneresii
Cause of suppurative vertebral osteomyelitis
Salmonella dublin
Gross lesion and pathogenesis with bone disorders:
Osteogenesis imperfecta
Osteopetrosis
Osteomalacia
Osteogenesis imperfecta- brittle bone disease, type I collagen defect
Osteopetrosis- overly dense bones, because osteoclasts cannot resorb
Osteomalacia- bones soft, no active Vitamin D, so no Calcium, so bones cannot be mineralized
White infiltrate and infarction within bone marrow in a calf
Lymphoma (BLV)
