Glossary Terms Book 3 Flashcards
Uninhibited chemical chain reaction
A chemical reaction that produces more molecular energy than that needed for the reaction to occur. The molecular energy will result in the reaction becoming continuous.
Lanyard
A flexible line or strap attached to a worker’s harness at one end and to a lifeline or a fixed anchor point at the other end. The lanyard must comply with the CSA Standard Z259 requirements.
Lifeline
Is a vertical line attached to to a fixed anchor point to which a worker can attach their lanyard. This arrangement allows the worker more freedom of movement. The lifeline must comply with the CSA Standard Z259 requirements.
Lockbox
A designated box easily identifiable as a lockable box used in a group lockout.
Personal lock
A specific type of lock used by personnel - operators, contractors, engineers - that is uniquely identified as a personal lock
PPE
Personal protective equipment, such as goggles or steel toes
Turnarounds
Are planned and scheduled events for different types of energy plants to perform maintenance, repairs, inspections, and testing on equipment. Often the entire process is shut down, with all hazardous materials and energy removed to allow workers to work safely.
UEL
Upper explosion limit for gas concentrations in air
LEL
Lower explosion limit for gas concentrations in air
Anions
These are the negative ions. Therefore Na is a cation and Cl is an anion. As they say, “opposites attract”
Cations
These are the positive ions of a chemical mixture
CBD or Continuous Blowdown
This is normally found on high pressure boilers to control the total dissolved solids content of the boiler water.
Deaerator
Used mainly in large high pressure plants. The feedwater is pumped to this unit and mixed with steam to release any dissolved oxygen, which is then vented to the atmosphere
Effluent
This is the term used to describe the water or fluid that is discharged from a unit after treatment. Example would be water leaving a sodium zeolite softener
Feedwater
This is the water that is added to a boiler to replace the water that has been turned into steam or lost as part of operation
Grooving
The term given to carbon dioxide corrosion in condensate return lines when it is absorbed into the condensate forming an acidic solution
Ion Exchange
Ion exchange is the process of passing the feedwater through a material that contains a less harmful ion (such as sodium) so that the material exchanges the less harmful ion for a scale forming ion (such as calcium) in the water
Pitting
The term given to oxygen corrosion in a boiler or vessel
TDS or Totally Dissolved Solids
This is the total of all the dissolved solids contained in the water of a steam boiler. It includes any chemicals that may have been added for internal water treatment. Boiler manufacturers will provide a recommended level of TDS, which is controlled by adjusting the CBD. It can also be controlled by intermittent blowdown if a CBD is not installed.
