Glomerulonephritis(GN): Classification and Treatment Flashcards
what is the aetiology of the majority of GN
idiopathic
what are some secondary causes of GN
infection, malignancy, systemic disease(eg Goodpasture’s, lupus, vasculitis)
what is used to classify GM
renal biopsy
in the histological classification of GN, what does proliferative and non-proliferative mean
proliferative = presence of proliferation of mesangial cells non-proliferative = absence of proliferation of mesangial cells
in the histological classification of GN, what does focal and diffuse mean
focal = < 50% of glomeruli affected diffuse = > 50% glomeruli affected
in the histological classification of GN, what does global/segmental mean
global = all parts of glomeruli affected segmental = only some parts affected
what does crescentic mean in the classification of GN
presence of crescents around glomerulus in Bowman’s space, which is indicative of proliferation of endothelial cells
what are the aims of treatment for GN
reduce proteinuria, remission of nephrotic syndrome, preserve renal function
what is involved in the non-immunosuppressive treatment if GN
anti-hypertensives, ACEi/ARBs, diuretics, statins
what is involved in the immunosuppressive treatment of GN
corticosteroids, azathioprine, otehr immunosuppressant drugs
plasmapharesis and antibodies caa be used as well
what is involved in the treatment of nephrotic patients
fluid/salt restriction, diuretics, ACEi/ARB, immunosuppressants, IV albumin
