Benign Renal Cancer Flashcards
what benign tumours are there of the kidneys
simple cysts, angiomyolipoma, oncocytoma
describe the appearance of oncocytoma
spherical, capsulated, brown/tan colour, has central scar/spoke wheel pattern on CT
describe the presentation of oncocytoma
85% asymptomatic incidental findings, some have loin pain, haematuria
why is a biopsy not very useful for oncocytoma
because looks very similar to renal cell carcinoma, so can be uncertain
what treatment is used for oncocytoma
observation for 4-5 years if proven biopsy
what gender are angiomyolipomas usually seen in
females (80%)
what genetic condition is angiomyolipoma asociated with
tuberous sclerosis, 80% of TS patients have angiomyolipoma
what tissues does angiomyolipoma affect
blood vessels, immature smooth muscle and fat
describe the presentation of angiomyolipoma
50% incidental asymptomatic, loin pain, haematuria, mass, Wunderlich’s syndrome
what investigations are used for angiomyolipoma
USS(bright echo pattern), CT(fatty tumour of low density)
what treatment is used for angiomyolipoma
elective = embolisation or partial nephrectomy emergency = embolisation and emergency nephrectomy
what is the cut off for treatment of angiomyolipoma
4cm diameter
