Geography (paper 3) Flashcards
Title of physical geography fieldwork enquiry
How successful are the coastal management strategies in Seaford, East Sussex?
Beach profiles information (Seaford fieldwork data)
• We measured the gradient of the beach at three different sites to see if the beach was steepest next to the groyne
• Tape measure was used to create a transect of 10m and a clinometer and meter ruler to measure gradient
• Issues encountered: tape measure blew around in wind, uneven ground, human error
• To improve: Revisit the site and repeat test to improve reliability
What is a caliper used for?
Measuring the size of pebbles
Pebble measurement information (Seaford fieldwork data)
• A caliper was used to measure the length of 30 pebbles at 3 different sites to see if the groyne was stopping the largest pebbles from moving away
• Issues: Some rocks were too big to measure, hard to choose longest axis
• To improve: Take pebbles from more sites to better represent the beach
Field sketches information
(Seaford fieldwork data)
• An area with coastal management was sketched and it was compared to an area with none
• Pencil was used to make sketches and annotations were added to show what’s happening
• Issues: landscape is constantly changing, weren’t able to capture everything
• To improve: take a pic and compare with field sketch
Bipolar surveys information (Seaford fieldwork data)
• The coastal management was assessed using a set of criteria
• Each was given a score and numbers were compared
• Issues: It was subjective (based on opinion)
• To improve: Work out range of opinions
