Genetic Engineering Flashcards
What is genetic engineering?
Its a way of putting healthy genes into affected cells using genetic modification so the cells work properly.
Give three examples of genetic engineering
They can be used in agriculture to improve growth rates of plants and animals.
It can also be used in developing cures for conditions ranging from cancer to diabetes by genetically modifying mice so they mimic human diseases.
Also producing GM rice which is very rich in Vitamin A to combat blindness in children.
Give three benefits of genetic engineering
It improves growth rates of plants and animals.
Crops are designed to grow well in different climates of the world.
GM crops are helping to solve problems of world hunger and almost 60% of soybeans are GM strains.
Give three concerns about genetic engineering.
Effect of GM food on human health.
Concerns GM plants genes might affect wildlife and flowers and insects.
Fears about human engineering and people using this process to have designer children with high intelligence or good looks.
