Why do some species go extinct?

Some species such as dinosaurs and mammoths have become extinct because of various reasons such as a new predator destroying them all or even a new disease that could wipe out the entire species.
There are also other factors such as a competitor eating all the food or a rapid change in the environment in which they live.
