Artery Veins And Capillarys Flashcards
1
Q
What is an artery?
A
Arteries have thick walls containing muscle and elastic fibres. They stretch when blood goes through them and goes back into shape afterwards.
2
Q
What are veins?
A
Veins carry blood away from the organs towards the heart. They are thinner than arteries and have valves to prevent backflow of blood. The blood in the veins is low in oxygen and is a deep purple red colour.

Q
What is a capillary?
A
Substances diffuse in and out of the blood in the capillaries. Capillaries form a huge network of tiny vessels connecting the arteries and the veins. They are very narrow and this allows oxygen and glucose to diffuse out of the blood and into the cells.
