Genes2 Flashcards
What is genetics?
The study of genetics
What is heredity?
The way information is passed from parents to offspring
Who is Gregor Mendel?
A monk who did research on pea plants
Revolutionized the biological sciences
Why did Mendel use pea plants?
Because they could cross pollinate
What is fertilization?
When the frank portion of the flower produces the eggs and joins with the male pollen which produces sperm
What does fertilization produce?
Develops into a new cell which develops into a tiny embryo encased within a seed
When Mendel crossed different traits and ended up with plants that are?
Hybrids
Hybrids usually show?
The traits from one parent
What are genes?
Chemical factors that determine traits
Each trait that Mendel studied was controlled by?
Controlled by one gene that occurred in two contrasting forms AKA alleles
Alleles that always show up or expressed are called?
Dominant alleles
Alleles that would not show up or expressed are called?
Recessive alleles
What were Mendel’s two principles?
Biological inheritance is determined by genes that are passed from parents
Some alleles are dominant and some are recessive
Mendel called purebreeds the?
The P generation or parental generation
Mendel called hybrids?
The F1 or first filial generation
