Cell Functions Flashcards
Vacuoles
Store materials like salts proteins and carbohydrates
Nucleus
Contains DNA and the coded instructions for making proteins and other important molecules
Vesicles
Store and move materials between organelles and to and from the cell surface
Lysosomes
Break down lipids, carbohydrates, proteins into small molecules that can be used by the rest of the cell
And break down old organelles
Cytoskeleton
Helps the cell maintain it’s shape and also is involved with it’s movement
Centrioles
Help organize cell division
Ribosomes
Produce proteins by following coded instructions that come from DNA
Rough Endoplasmic reticulum
Where proteins are inserted by the ribosomes and chemically modified
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
Contains collections of Enzymes that perform specialized tasks
Such as detoxifying of drugs
Golgi Apparatus
Modifies, sorts, and packages proteins and other materials from the Endoplasmic reticulum for storage in the cell or release the outside the cell
Chloroplasts
Capture energy from sunlight and convert it into food that contains chemical energy in the process called photosynthesis
Mitochondria
Converts the chemical energy stored in food into compounds that are more convenient for the cell to use
Cell wall
Support,shape, and protect the cell
Cell membrane
Regulated what enters and what leaves the cell
Also protects and supports the cell
Fiss
Cleft split
