General PE Flashcards
What is meant by “flexion”
Bending by decreasing the angle between two bones
What is meant by “extension”
Bending by increasing angle between two bones.
What is meant by “abduction”
Movement of bone away from body midline. (Abduction of person = taken away)
What is meant by “adduction”
Movement of bone towards body midline.
What is meant by “medial rotation” (internal rotation)
Rotation of bone towards midline around a central axis
What is meant by “lateral rotation” (external rotation)
Rotation of bone away from body midline around a central axis
What is meant by “Circumduction”
The conical movement of a bone around a joint so that the end of the bone draws the base on a cone with the joint being the vertex
What is meant by the term “supination”
Rotate palms upwards so ulna and radius are parallel (Superhero Spider-Man faces his palm up to shoot webs)
What is meant by the term “pronation”
Rotate so palms face down and radius and ulna cross.(A fist (Palm face down) is used to protest yourself)
What is meant by the term “eversion”
Movement of sole of foot away from midline at the ankle.
What is meant by the term “Inversion
Movement of the sole of the foot towards the midline at the ankle.
What is meant by the term “Dorsiflexion”
Raising of the toes (towards tibia) from the ankle joint.
What is meant by the term “plantarflexion”
The pointing of the toes from ankle joint
What is the myotatic stretch reflex
When muscle spindles sense the muscle stretching quickly it activates a reflex which involves quickly contracting muscles to prevent further stretching and possible damage. Involves rapid concentric contraction following an eccentric contraction.
What three ways does the brain receive feedback regarding; adjusting contraction intensity?
Golgi tendon organs
Joint receptors
Muscle spindles
