GENERAL AND SPECIAL SENSES (INTRO) Flashcards
➢ Brain receives information about the environment and the body
Senses
➢ process initiated by stimulating sensory receptors and perception
Sensation
➢ conscious awareness of those stimuli
Perception
Five recognized senses:
- Smell
- Taste
- Vision
- Hearing
- Touch
Senses are divided into two:
- General senses
- Special senses
Nerve endings or specialized cells capable of responding to stimuli by developing action
Sensory Receptors
Sensory Receptors:
- Mechanoreceptors
- Chemoreceptors
- Photoreceptors
- Thermoreceptors
- Nociceptors
respond to chemicals.
Chemoreceptors
respond to mechanical stimuli; bending and
stretching
Mechanoreceptors
respond to light
Photoreceptors
respond to temperature changes
Thermoreceptors
respond to stimuli that result in the
sensation of pain (noceo = to injure)
Nociceptors
