Horizontal segregation
Concentration of male or females in different sectors of work
Vertical Segregation
Makes hold the top jobs in the labour market, used for more skilled and higher paid jobs
Glass ceiling
Females can’t reach the top jobs or promotions
Concrete ceiling
The labour market is much tougher than the glass ceiling for women who struggle to even get middle management positions
Sexual harrasment
Unwelcome sexual advances or comments verbally/physically
Sticky Floor
Keeps certain people at the bottom in employment
Leaky Pipeline
Women interested in maths, science, technology etc eventually leave and pursue other careers
Motherhood Penalty
Working mothers are disadvantaged in the workplace in pay
Patriarchy
Male dominated society
Expressive/Instrumental roles
Expressive: Women have a natural role to care
Instrumental: Men have a natural role to provide and be the breadwinner
Human Capital theory
Men build up skills and qualifications where women take breaks (family) look for part time work and focus on caring
Dual Labour Market
Primary labour market is secure and well paid, dominated by men.
Secondary labour market is insecure low skilled and low paid mainly occupied by women
Reserve army of labour
Women are only used when men are not available and will accept lower pay
Double Disadvantage
A female part of an ethnic minority
