Q

How does an ADPF flight appear on the AC radar and what happens if the flight needs to stop squawking Mode A + C?

A

They are identified in the AC system as emergency codes and appear with a flashing red/yellow border on the TDB, and showing ‘SPC’ in Line 3b of the TDB. These tracks are identified as foreground and will generate conflict warnings if STCA parameters are infringed.

Should the ADPF require to stop squawking Mode A + C, the Military will have already paired the ADPF aircraft with its squawk and therefore the track pairing will be retained for AC controllers, and the flashing TDB border will cease and be replaced with a ‘show crosser’ from the Military.

Q

OAT on a CFP are to remain within what distance of the co-ordinated track? If it deviates outside of this range, what can the civil controller assume the aircraft to be doing?

A

5nm

If the aircraft deviates outside of this range it can be assumed to be “taking 5” and that the CFP is cancelled.

6
Q

What is required from the Military controller when an a CFP aircraft has some form of special status, e.g. NDS?

A

Controller is to accompany the CFP request with a phone call detailing the special status.

Q

What is the process for handling a non-electronic CFP?

A
  • On receipt of a request the Planner is to assess the request and inform the tactical, and if there is conflicting traffic, agree a course of action, and notify the Military controller accordingly
  • Planner to use the ‘send crosser’ function to highlight the flight to the tactical
  • If available, the appropriate Radar Corridor/Defined Route Blocker will be used to protect the airspace while the flight crosses. If not available then a custom route blocker can be drawn, creating a TDL in the pending bay
  • The tactical is to acknowledge the crossing clearance by clicking on the TDL DDF pick area, and move it to the Incomm bay

Q

Under what circumstances would Swanwick (Mil) input a CFL of FL990?

A
  • An aircraft has no Mode C and is climbing/descending to a level. When a pilot has confirmed reaching and maintaing a FL, the reported level will be input as the CFL
  • When traffic is released off the Swanwick (Mil) frequency without an agreement to maintain a specific level or FL block (such as general handling beneath an airway)
  • The aircraft is operating at supersonic speeds and requires enhanced separation

Q

Standing Co-ordination Procedures apply between which two units in respect of which two types of air traffic?

A

Applies between Swanwick (Mil) and LAC in respect of code callsign converted on-route GAT and crossing OAT with validated and verified SSR codes.

Q

What separation does SCP allow the Military controller to apply?

A

Minimum vertical separation of 1,000ft (2,000ft if either aircraft are RVN in RVSM airspace or above FL410), without co-ordination between subsonic aircraft up to and including FL450 as follows:

  • Crossing OAT above descending GAT displaying a 2 letter destination code
  • Crossing OAT below climbing GAT displaying a NAS intention code

13
Q

What are the conditions for applying SCP?

A
  • GAT is to be established within a UAR or the airway structure
  • Military Controllers will identify GAT against which SCP can be applied by recognition of the SSR data block
  • Military Controllers will monitor the GAT to ensure that it is proceeding in the anticipated sense before applying vertical separation when crossing the airway/UAR
  • Military Controllers will ensure that minimum vertical separation is not based on anticipated ROC/ROD of the GAT alone. If necessary they will impose a ‘stop-off’ level to the OAT to ensure the minimum vertical separation is achieved
  • SCP vertical separation minima of 2,000ft is applicable if any of the relevant aircraft are either non-RVSM in RVSM airspace or above FL410, or are engaged in a task which precludes the use of RVSM separation
  • SCP is not applicable if aircraft are operating in supersonic flight
  • SCP is not applicable in airspace where ATS has been delegated to an external unit
  • SCP may be applied against GAT when off route, when off route status has been granted

14
Q

If any conditions for the application of SCP cannot be met, or there is any doubt as to the intentions of the GAT aircraft, what are the requirements of the military controller?

A
  • Request co-ordination with the appropriate sector; or

- Apply 5nm radar separation/5,000ft vertical separation between the crossing OAT and the GAT

15
Q

What are the responsibilities of both the military/civil controller when there is a change to the vertical profile of the GAT aircraft?

A

Military:
- If climbing/descending GAT is levelled off, the military controller shall provide 2,000ft separation/5nm as soon as possible

Civil:
- If climbing GAT traffic is given descent/descending GAT traffic given climb, it is the responsibility of the civil controller to co-ordinate with the relevant Military controller if the GAT comes into conflict with an OAT crosser previously applying SCP

16
Q

When is GAT considered to be on route?

A

When:

  • Within the UAR structure or along the alignment and within 5nm of the centreline of a published upper ATS (or associated link route)
  • Within a published airway above FL195
  • Within CAS below FL195
  • Within Reduced Co-ordination Areas (RCAs) when authorised and where procedures are defined in unit MATS Part 2
  • Between the hours of 0001-0600 local, when aircraft are following Night Time Fuel Saving Routes (NTFSR)
  • Within NSTORAs when authorised and where procedures are defined in unit MATS Part 2
17
Q

What is the procedure for clearing GAT to fly off route above FL195 outside of quiet hours procedures?

A
  • Appropriate Military supervisor/controller is to be notified of the intention to clear GAT off-route, giving 5 minutes notice where possible
  • Information passed is to include route, FL (including any proposed changes) and SSR code
  • If the aircraft is cleared off route outside of quiet hours procedures then the civil controller assumes responsibility for initiating co-ordination whenever off-route GAT appears in conflict with OAT
18
Q

When are the core periods for quiet hours?

A

1700-0800 UTC (winter) and 1600-0700 UTC (summer) daily; weekends and UK public holidays

19
Q

What are the four types of flight allowed priority over an NDS flight?

A
  • Aircraft in an emergency
  • Royal Flights
  • Notified ADFP flights
  • Special flights notified as having a higher priority
20
Q

What are the four levels of disruptive passenger?

A

Level 1 - disruptive (suspicious or verbally threatening) behaviour
Level 2 - physically abusive behaviour
Level 3 - life threatening behaviour
Level 4 - attempted or actual breach of the flight crew compartment

21
Q

What is the potential impact on a sector of an ADPF?

A

There may be little, if any, warning and they must be given priority without infringing flight safety. When intercepting the TDB will have a flashing yellow and red border unless the aircraft needs to stop squawking Mode A.

22
Q

How can the Swanwick (Mil) controller ID be identified from a Military TDB?

A

Line 3A of the TDB shows the controller ID.

23
Q

When asked to relay a message from the UK Air Defence Authorities to investigate the identity of an aircraft flying over the UK, how should your message be prefixed?

A

“I have a message for you from the United Kingdom Air Defence Authority. For national security reasons you are instructed to….”
