GDS Chapter 8 Flashcards
What is proportion?
How we consider size relationships; the size of parts to one another and to the whole.
What is harmony?
Agreement within a composition, where elements are constructed, arranged, and function in relation to one another to a congruent effect.
What are the Fibonacci Numbers?
A numerical sequence used as a model for constructing proportion.
What are Fibonacci squares?
Squares that have sides with lengths that correspond to the numbers in the Fibonacci sequence.
What is another name for the Golden Ratio?
The golden mean, a golden rectangle.
What is the Rule of Thirds?
Asymmetry to create visual interest and balance.
What does the Rule of Thirds aim to do?
Prevent the placement of the focal point at the center of a composition, dividing the composition in half.
What is modularity?
A structural principle employed to subdivide a format into manageable smaller parts.
What is a module?
Any single fixed element within a bigger system or structure.
What can modularity be used for?
To create hand-lettering, symbol systems, pixel effects, etc..
What is chunking?
A technique related to modularity, where content is split or grouped into chunks.
What is the aim of chunking?
To break content into digestible amounts to make reading easier.
What is another name for a single-column grid?
A manuscript grid.
What is a single-column grid?
A single column or block of text surrounded by margins.
What should you base the design of margins on?
Functional and aesthetic considerations.
What does a single-column grid work well for?
Books and mobile screens.
What are columns?
Vertical alignments or arrangements used to accommodate text and images.
What are column intervals?
The space between columns.
What do flowlines do?
Establish horizontal alignments in a grid and aid visual flow.
What is a spatial zone?
A distinct field formed by grouping several grid modules together in order to organize the placement of various graphic elements.
What do spatial zones do?
Keep proportional relationships, the Gutenberg Rule, and visual weight in mind.
What is a baseline?
The invisible line upon which type sits, defining the bottom of capital and lowercase letters, excluding descenders.
What is the functional benefit of modular grids?
Information can be chunked into individual modules or grouped together into spatial zones.
What should spatial zones produce?
A clear visual heirarchy.
