GDS Chapter 5 Flashcards
What is any quality graphic design solution based on?
A design concept.
What is concept generation?
The act of coming up with ideas, cogently stating the idea, and then evaluating it.
What are some skills of critical thinkers?
Asking penetrating questions.
Employing correct reasoning.
Identifying and addressing key issues.
Separating fact from fiction.
Identifying patterns or connections.
What are questions of fact?
Who, what, when, and where?
What are questions of analysis?
Why and how?
What is T-shaped thinking?
The vertical line represents expertise and skill in your craft. The horizontal line represents knowledge in other areas.
What are the three stages of the concept-generation process?
Initial investigation -> Respite -> the sudden emergence of an idea
What is the four-step model for the concept-generation process?
Preparation -> Incubation -> Illumination -> Verification
What should you do for preparation?
Record any idea or insight.
Examine materials for insights into the audience, brand, cause, or entity.
Scrutinize for connections among thoughts and facts. Correlate to find an insight or concept.
What can you do during incubation?
Take a break to let your subconscious mind work. Try other art to stimulate an emotional response.
What can you do for illumination?
Sketch, research, collaborate, write, collage, figure out the wrong response, etc.; this is where design concept generation starts to take form.
What do you do for verification?
After generating a concept, you need to evaluate it, testing for both functionality and creativity. Assess your concepts against the design brief.
What are some facets of creative thinking?
Associative thinking, metaphorical thinking, elaboration and modification, and imaginative thinking.
What is associative thinking?
Recognizing commonalities and common attributes.
What is metaphorical thinking?
Identifying similarities between seemingly unrelated things.
