Gamete Stats Flashcards
How many sperm/ml of sperm?
~100 million sperm/ml of semen
What percentage of semen is sperm?
less than 10%
How much semen/ejaculate?
typical ejaculate volume is ~3ml
Based on sperm numbers:
1) when may fertility issues arise? 2) when may sterility become an issue?
1) less than 20 mill. sperm/ml probably results in fertility problems
- less than 50 mill sperm in ejaculate results in fert. problems
2) less than 10 mill. sperm/ml generally considered sterile
How many sperm are morphologically abnormal?
Up to 10% of sperm in normal semen are morphologically abnormal
Based on sperm morphology:
1) when may fertility problems arise?
1) more than 25% abnormal sperm probably results in fertility problems
For good fertility likelihood:
1) how many sperm are motile after 2hrs? 2) how many sperm are motile after 24hrs?
for fertility:
1) 50% sperm should be motile after 2hrs 2) some sperm should be motile after 24hrs - sperm probably don't survive more than 48 hours in female reproductive tract
How long are sperm viable in female reproductive tract?
no more than 48hrs
