FuelEU maritime Flashcards

1
Q

Measures to ensure that the greenhouse gas intensity of fuels used by the shipping sector will gradually decrease over time, by X% in 2025 to as much as X% by 2050.

A

Measures to ensure that the greenhouse gas intensity of fuels used by the shipping sector will gradually decrease over time, by 2% in 2025 to as much as 80% by 2050.

Q

An obligation for passenger ships and containers to do what? in major EU ports as of when?, with a view to mitigating air pollution in ports, which are often close to densely populated areas

A

use on-shore power supply for all electricity needs while moored at the quayside as of 2030

Q

Is there any flexibility to meet GHG intensity targets?

A

There is a voluntary pooling mechanism, under which ships will be allowed to pool their compliance balance with one or more other ships, with the pool – as a whole - having to meet the greenhouse gas intensity limits on average.

16
Q

Does it apply to all energy in the ship?

A

It applies to all energy used on ships at EU ports of call and on voyages between EU ports of call, to half of the energy used on voyages between an EU port and a third country, and on voyages between EU ports of call where one of the ports is in an outermost region.

17
Q

Can passenger ships be exempted?

A

Voyages performed by passenger ships, other than cruise passenger ships, to islands with fewer than 200 000 permanent residents, may be exempeted. A similar exemption should be allowed with regard to domestic voyages to islands which are performed within the framework of a public service contract or subject to a public service obligation.

18
Q

Can low-carbon fuels be used to claim GHG emissions reduction? What about biofuels from food-and-feed crops?

A

Yes, low-carbon fuels can be used. No, biofiuels from food-and-feed crops can’t.

19
Q

In the maritime sector, RFNBOs can receive a reward factor of x times.

A

2 times.

20
Q

What are the targets for RFNBOs?

A

If the share of RFNBO is less than 1 % for 2031, a 2 % will be required from 2034, subject to availability and price conditions to be assessed by the Commission.
The target can be met also with biofuels, excluding part B of Annex IX and food-and-feed crops.
