Frontal Lobe and executive function Flashcards
What are the executive functions of the frontal cortex?
goal setting, inhibition, monitoring, updating and task switching
What roles do the orbitofrontal (a.k.a ventromedial) and frontal pole play in executive function?
involved in planning goals and achieving results towards your goals
What role does the lateral prefrontal cortex play in executive function?
working memory (i.e., obtaining informatio that you could manipulate and use to achieve your goals)
What role does the medial frontal lobe play in executive function?
monitors progress towards your goals and maintains attention.
What areas on the lateral surface of the brain are involved in cognitive control?
lateral prefrontal cortex; orbitofrontal cortex; pre motor area; primary motor cortex; frontal pole
What areas on the medial surface of the brain are invovled in cognitive control?
medial frontal cortex; orbitofrontal cortex; premotor area; primary motor cortex; frontal pole
Apart from its executive functions, the frontal cortex is responsible for
where and what we focus on, allocating resources and time towards what we focus on, source memory, working memory, personality and social cognition, and motor control
What parts of the frontal cortex are responsible for inhibition?
cingulate gyrus (BA 23 and 24) and medial superior (BA 9 and 32)
What part of the frontal cortex is responsible for both theory of mind and source memory?
Medial frontal (BA 32 and 33)
What part of the frontal cortex is responsible for phonological loop rehearsal, syntax, and the conversion of phonology to phonetics?
Broca’s area and pre-motor area
What part of the frontal cortex is responsible for recency (an aspect of S.T.M.) and the episodic buffer?
dorsolateral prefrontal cortex
What part of the frontal cortex is responsible for social interactions (i.e., pragmatics) and emotional control?
cingulate gyrus and ventromedial and orbitofrontal areas
The frontal lobe is linked to the following areas:
sensory association areas, limbic system (can override executive functions), basal ganglia, and thalamus
Regarding executive functions, working memory is responsible for
providing information that helps us achieve our goals and is involved in sequencing
Source memory is in which part of the brain?
prefrontal cortex
