Fresh & Salt water Systems Checkpoint Seven Flashcards
What is diversity?
The variety of different species in an ecosystem, may also be used to describe variety in a population or species.
What are the four lake zones?
1) Littoral Zone (near shore)
2) Limnetic Zone (far from shore)
3) Euphotic Zone (upper layer of water)
4) Profundal Zone (lower layer of water)
What are the three ocean zones?
1) Intertidal Zone (near shore)
2) Continental shelf (the “shelf” of land under water)
3) Oceanic Zone (deep ocean)
What is an Estuary?
The end of a river where by the fresh water of a river begins to mix with salt water of an ocean. This water is called brackish water- the mix of salt and fresh water.
What are Adaptations?
Physical characteristics or behavior of a species that increases the species’ chance of survival in a particular environment.
What are the main environmental factors that lead to adaptations?
- temperature
- light
- pressure
- salinity
- water movement
