Fresh & Salt water Systems Checkpoint Five Flashcards
What should water be tested completely by?
- color and cloudiness
- dissolved salts and minerals
- toxic substances
- bacteria
- pH
- even taste! (just don’t drink it if it is green and chunky)
What is water quality?
A measure of the amount of substances beside water in a water sample, or description of how pure a water sample is.
What is potable water?
Water that is safe for humans (and other organisms) to drink.
What is salinity?
The amount of dissolved salts in a body of water.
True or false? Humans can drink salt water.
FALSE
what is hard water?
Water containing a high concentration of mostly calcium and magnesium, can sometimes have iron.
what are the characteristics of hard water?
- Potable
- groundwater well sources have hard water
- soap does not lather or bubble up
- leaves white deposits of limescale
What is soft water?
Water containing little or no calcium or magnesium content.
What are the characteristics of soft water?
- Potable
- rainwater is soft
- soap lathers and rinses better, also bubbles up
- does not leave deposits of limescale
What toxins can there be in water?
- lead
- arsenic
- mercury
- copper
- radium
- sulfur
- pesticides
What is a pH scale?
Written pH is a scale that measures how acidic or basic water is.
What pH do you want your water (to drink) to be?
5.5-7.5 pH
What is a universal indicator?
A substance that can be added to a solution to check the pH of the solution. The pH of the solution will create a color change in the solution.
