Cells & Systems Nervous System Flashcards
What are the neurons do in the nervous system?
They are specialized cells of the nervous system that receive and Transmit information.
What are the dendrites in a neuron?
They are small branches of a neuron that receive information from neighboring cells.
What is the axon in a neuron?
It is a long extension of a neuron’s cell body that transmits information to the neighboring cells.
What is the myelin sheath in a neuron?
It is an insulation layer, or sheath that forms around nerves.
What is the Central Nervous System made up of in the nervous system?
It is made up of the brain and spinal cord.
What is the Peripheral Nervous System made up of in the nervous system?
It is made up of nerves that branch out from the brain and spinal cord.
What are the three sections of the brain?
The cerebrum, cerebellum, and medulla.
What does the cerebrum control?
Moving, thinking, interpreting, and the five senses.
What does the cerebellum control?
Motor movement coordination, balance, equilibrium, and muscle tone.
What does the medulla control?
Breathing, digestion, heart function.
What are sensory neurons in the nervous system?
Cells that carry information from the body to the central nervous system.
What are motor neurons in the nervous system?
Cells that carry information from the CNS to the muscle or other organs.
What is the somatic nervous system?
Responding voluntarily to stimuli.
What is the autonomic nervous system?
Responding automatically to stimuli.
What is a reflex?
An automatic response to stimuli.
