Fresh & Salt water Systems Checkpoint Nine Flashcards
What does Acidophile mean?
Organism lives in acidic environments.
What does Alkaliphile mean?
Organism lives in basic environments.
What does Halophile mean?
Organism lives in salty environments.
What does Thermophile mean?
Organism lives very hot environments.
What are Bioindicator Species?
Species scientists look for to indicate overall quality of water. Some species also indicate certain characteristics of water. (ex. pH)
What are the top three Major types of water use?
1) Agriculture (73%)
2) Industry (22%)
3) Domestic (5%)
What does agriculture use water for?
- used for irrigation to grow crops
- important for economy and food for people
- over-irrigation can cause problems (fertilizer leak)
What does Industry use water for?
- Thermal-Electric power plants largest users of water industrially
- Tar-Sand operations use a lot of water (not returned to environment)
- Manufacturing plants ( paper, metal, etc)
- Mining operations require water to assist mining process
How is water used domestically?
- sanitation
- recreational
- consumption
How is water quality being impacted by human processes?
1) Air pollution affects global warming- warms the oceans.
2) Untreated Sewage is dumped directly into nearby water systems.
3) Fertilizer runoff from farms increases the growth of algae and creates algae blooms.
4) Plastic wastes do not break down and negatively affects living organisms living in the water.
5) Industrial wastes such as acids, coal ash, metal scraps, and oils pollute water.
What does monitor mean?
Observe, check, or keep track of something for a specific purpose.
What does Environment Canada do?
- monitors environmental conditions including water quality
- upholds regulations imposed to prevent negative effects
- enforces laws passed to prevent problems from happening
