fluid balance Flashcards
what is the total body fluid in males and females
60% males
50% females
what is Euhydration
normal total body water
what is hyperhydration
excess total body water
what is hypohydration
reduced total body water
what is dehydration
dynamic process of total water loss
when water is lost through sweat, where in the body is the water lost from?
plasma volume 68%
intracellular water 23%
what is the thirst threshold (osmolarity)
298mosmol/kg compared to normal osmolarity 280mosmol/kg
how does a reduction in plasma volume due to sweat affect the cv system
less volume leads to decreased pressure. HR must increase to keep up blood pressure and cardiac output
leads to a decrease in blood flow to skin
when should water be consumed to counteract the negative effects of dehydration
prior to, during and after exercise
how does hypohydration affect the thermoregulatory system
fluid loss and dehydration rapidly reduce the body’s ability to regulate temperature
fluid loss means that the body needs to reduce skin directed blood flow and sweating to conserve fluid but this affects the bodys ability to decrease temperature
what factors limit prolonged exercise
substrates
core temp
cardiovascular strain
