Flexibility Training Flashcards
What types of flexibility training is there?
Static stretching (active or passive)
Ballistic stretching
Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF)
What is static stretching?
Helps to reduce the risk of muscle soreness and injury by using active or passive stretching.
What is active and passive stretching?
Active: performed independently and uses internal force to stretch muscles
Passive: performed with a partner or object to provide external force to stretch the muscles
What is ballistic training?
Uses the force of limb movement to stretch muscles beyond their normal range by using fast and jerky movements.
What is PNF?
An advanced version of passive stretching which develops flexibility, mobility and strength. Often used in rehabilitation programs as the muscle is stretched for 6-10 seconds before having a rest and then repeating.
