Finals - Intravenous Fluid - Sheet1 Flashcards
are prescribed in
order to restore fluid to the
intravascular compartment. Some
fluids are used to facilitate the
movement of fluid between
compartments due to osmosis.
Intravenous Fluids
– Same concentration of dissolved
particles as blood and stays in
the intravascular space and
osmosis does not cause fluid
movement between
compartments
– They are used for patients with
fluid volume deficit
ISOTONIC
SOLUTIONS
No osmotic flow
ISOTONIC
SOLUTIONS
– Have lower concentration of dissolved
solutes than blood
– When infused, there is a decreased
concentration of dissolved solutes in the
blood
– This causes osmotic movement of water
from the intravascular compartment into
the intracellular space
HYPOTONIC
SOLUTIONS
Osmotic flow into the cell
HYPOTONIC
SOLUTIONS
– Have a higher concentration of
dissolved particles than blood
– Can cause an increase
concentration of dissolved solutes
in the intravascular space
– Causes osmotic movement of wter
out of the cells and into the blood
HYPERTONIC
SOLUTIONS
Osmotic flow out of the cell
HYPERTONIC
SOLUTIONS
Normal saline
Lactated ringer’s solution
5% dextrose in water
ISOTONIC
SOLUTIONS
0.45% sodium chloride
5% dextrose in water
HYPOTONIC
SOLUTIONS
3% sodium chloride
5% dextrose and 0.45% sodium chloride
5% dextrose and lactated ringer’s
HYPERTONIC
SOLUTIONS
