Finals Flashcards
Dura Mater (outer)
A tough outer layer of dense irregular connective tissue
Arachnoid mater (middle)
A spiderweb-like layer of collagen and elastic fibers, located inside the dura mater
Pia mater (inner)
A thin, transparent, vascular connective tissue membrane that covers the surface of the spinal cord and membrane
Dural venous sinuses
Some portions of the dura mater around the brain, are double-layered and contain veins
Subdural space
Potential space between subarachnoid matter and pia mater of spinal cord and brain
Subarachnoid mater
Potential space between subarachnoid matter and pia mater of spinal cord and brain
Cerebrospinal fluid
Protects and cushions the spinal cord and brain. Formed by the ventricles of the brain
Ventricles
CSF-filled cavities within the brain
Choroid plexuses
Line the inside ventricle walls
Blood-CSF barrier
Prevents harmful substances from getting into the brain
Circulation of CSF
CSF from the ventricles flows into the subarachnoid space and central canal. CSF is reabsorbed through arachnoid villi from the subarachnoid space of the brain into the dural venous sinuses in the dura mater
Capillaries
Consists of simple squamous epithelium with small intercellular clefts between the epithelial cells
Blood-brain barrier
O2, CO2, alcohol, and most anesthetics cross the BBB easily, while glucose and other nutrients cross the BBB by transport proteins, also prevents the passage of neurotoxins that can harm neurons
Cerebrum
The largest part of the brain, conscious thought and learning occurs here
Cerebellum
The second largest part of the brain
