Final Exam Circulatory Disorders Flashcards
How do you know you have a circulatory disorder?
You see:
Discrete reddened areas = hemorrhage
Lesions follow a linear pattern
Lesions are in geometrical shapes (indicating mapping to a vascular supply)
Vascular lesions which result in ischemia will lead to gross features of degeneration/necrosis
What is the difference between congestion and hemorrhage in the skin?
Skin hemorrhage is BRIGHT red, congestion is a darker color
What are the two most important characteristics
you see when you have a
Primary Hemostasis Defect
Vasculitis
and
Thrombocytopenia
A pig presents with “diamond skin disease”.
MDx: Cutaneous infarcts
The cause is a bacteria called Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae
What pathological circulatory disturbances are associated with this condition?
Thrombosis & Vasculitis
MDx: multifocal cutaneous ecchymotic hemorrhages
What is the cause?
Primary hemostasis defect (vasculitis and thrombocytopenia)
What does an infarct look like grossly?
Sharply demarcated geometrical shaped dark red to blue area.
As time goes by, it becomes firm, dry, sunken, darkened,
and features of necrosis begin to predominate over hemorrhage
What can cause an infarct?
Vasculitis
(gram negative septicemias-Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, Salmonella, Ecoli)
(Edema Disease- Ecoli shiga toxin 2e)
(Spider or snake bite)
(Drug reaction)
Frostbite
Toxins causing extreme vasoconstriction
(Ergot)
What is the pathogenesis of Purpura hemorrhagica?
Type 3 immune-mediated vasculitis
(antigen-antibody complex goes into vascular walls)
This causes ACUTE inflammation
What causes **Purpura Hemorrhagica **in horses?
Streptococcus equi infection
A horse presents with red and purple macules and patches in its skin and mucous membrane. You also see ecchymotic hemorrhages, *subcutaneous edema, *and multifocal hemorrhages.
What is your diagnosis and what is the cause?
Purpura hemorrhagica
caused by
Streptococcus equi
