Final: Chapter 14 Flashcards
A method of research used when researchers have complex research questions and answer the questions by using a quantitative and qualitative methods in the same study.
Mixed methods research
What are the key questions to ask about mixed methods research design?
- Were the two components of the study (e.g., quantitative and qualitative)? Are they implemented concurrently or sequentially?
- If sequential, which was implemented first?
- How did the researchers combined or interpret the findings of one component in light of the other?
Why would a researcher chose a mixed methods design?
mixed methods studies allow researcher to capitalized on strengths of #’s and words to answer different components or stages of research questions.
What are the challenges of mixed methods designs?
combining quantitative and qualitative date
use of resources
funding
Challenges of mixed methods design?
Studies must be carefully designed to assure congruence between the problem, purpose, questions, designs, data collection and analysis, and interpretation of findings.
Integration of each component is needed.
Resources of mixed methods design?
longer time commitment
Funding of mixed methods design?
time to complete/complex
multidisciplinary team
What is outcomes research?
Focuses on how a pts health status changes as a result of the nursing care received or the nursing services delivered
Outcomes research seeks to understand the end result of particular HC practices and interventions
What is the theoretical basis of outcomes research?
Concepts of Donabedian’s Theories
What are 3 foci of evaluation in appraising quality?
structure
process
outcomes
What is structure examples?
nursing units, hospitals, home
What is process?
how care is provided
What is outcomes?
results of care
