Q

PRODUCTION OF COTTON

A
Cotton fibres come from the boll.
2-3cm long, white & fluffy.
Picked by hand or machine.
Fibres separated from seeds (GINNING).
Fibres pressed into bales.
Cotton graded according to length of fibres.
Fibres combed and spun into yarn.

Q

PRODUCTION OF LINEN

A

Comes from flax plant in cool, damp climates eg: Ireland, Belgium, Russia.
Grows to a metre, stems pulled up by roots.
Stems left to soak for a few weeks to rot (RETTING)
Fibres separated from woody parts.
Fibres combed and spun into yarn.
Long fibres: Fine yarn.
Short fibres: Coarse yarn.

Q

SILK PRODUCTION

A

Produced since ancient times in China and Japan.
Produced by the silkworm.
Worms spin cocoons of silk.

Q

PRODUCTION OF REGENERATED FIBRES

A

Cellulose from tree & cotton waste is pulped and mixed w/ chemicals.
It turns into a thick liquid.
Liquid is forced through tiny holes in a spinneret to make yarn.
Yarn is twisted and cut.
