CHO ( carbon hydrogen and oxygen.)
COMPOSITION OF CARBOHYDRATES
Carbohydrates are made up of simple sugars. An example of a simple sugar is glucose.
FUNCTIONS.
Sugars and starches provide heat and energy. Fibre helps the movement of food through the body. Fibre gives the feeling of fullness.
CLASSIFICATION OF CARBOHYDRATES
SUGARS, sources: Jam, honey, sugar, fruit and milk
STARCHES, sources: Cereals, potatoes,pulse and root vegetables.
DIETARY FIBRE, sources: Fruit and veg, brown rice, brown bread.
DIETARY FIBRE.
Extremely important in the diet,must already have water in the body for fibre to work properly.
HOW DOES FIBRE WORK IN THE BODY?
Absorbs water, bulky. Causes peristalsis (a muscular movement) as it moves through the body. Pushes food and unwanted waste out of the body.
WHAT CAN FIBRE PREVENT?
Fibre prevents constipation and other bowel problems.
