Fetal Circulation Flashcards
Ductus Venosus
Shunt between Umbilical Vein and IVC
Ductus Arteriosus
Shunt between Pulmonary Trunk and Distal part of Arch of Aorta
Foramen Ovale
Opening in interatrial septum between Left and Right Atrium
Where do the RBCs from the SVC end up? RBCs from the IVC?
- Right Ventricle
2. Left Atrium
What happens in the Right Atrium?
The nutrients and oxygen of the RBCs from the SVC and the RBCs from the IVC diffuse and equalize, but the RBCs themselves do not mix
Where do the Right and Left Umbilical Arteries come from?
The Right and Left Internal Iliac Arteries
What is the Main Rule of Fetal Circulation?
Bring blood in and get it to the brain as quickly as possible
Where does the brain receive its blood?
From the umbilical vein ONLY, it cannot receive from the SVC
What does the Umbilical Vein become?
Ligamentum Teres
What does the Ductus Venosus become?
Ligamentum Venosum
What does the Foramen Ovale become?
Fossa Ovalis
What does the Ductus Arteriosus become?
Ligamentum Arteriosum
What condition can the Ligamentum Arteriosum cause?
Coarctation of the Aorta
What are symptoms of Coarctation of the Aorta?
High BP above Coarctation and Low BP below Coarctation
What do the Umbilical Arteries become?
The Right and Left Medial Umbilical Ligaments
