what is myometrium?
smooth muscle in uterus (middle layer in uterine wall)
what is endometrium?
inner mucous membrane of uterus
what do growing follicles produce?
oestrogen
what is meant by ovarian symmetry?
usually only 1 ovary active per month and egg released from alternative sides of the body each month
what is tunica albuginea?
connective tissue that surrounds the ovaries , the testis and the corpora cavenosa of penis
what cells surrounds egg?
corona radiata cells (cumulus cells)
what does corpus luteum turn into?
corpus albicans
what is atresia?
natural process of cell death / degeneration of follicles
when does 1 follicle become more dominant?
day 9 - dominance suppresses growth of other follicles
what is PCD?
polycystic ovarian disease - many small follicles develop instead of one dominant one
what is ectopic pregnancy?
where pregnancy does not occur in right place (e.g. falopian tube)
what hormones are pre-ovulutionary and post-ovulationary?
pre - oestrogen
post - progesterone
how many follicles does cortex contain at birth?
~400,000
what do secondary (and teriary) follicles contain?
a vacuole
what is uterus function?
accept fertilised egg and allow implantation
