Feeding Relationships Flashcards
What is biomass?
The mass of living material, such as the mass of a living organism
What is a decomposer?
An organism that causes decay of dead material, such as many fungi and bacteria.
What is a primary consumer?
An animal that eats plants (also a herbivore)
What is a producer?
An organism that produces its own food, such as plants using light energy in photosynthesis to produce glucose.
What is a pyramid of biomass?
A diagram that shows the biomass in different trophic levels of a food chain, always a pyramid shape.
What is a pyramid of energy?
A diagram that shows the energy content of different trophic levels of a food chain, always a pyramid shape.
What is a pyramid of number?
A diagram that shows the number of individual organisms in different trophic levels of a food chain, often a pyramid shape.
What is a secondary consumer?
An animal that eats primary consumers
What is a tertiary consumer?
An animal that eats secondary consumers
What is a trophic level?
A feeding level in a food chain or food web, such as producer or primary consumer.
