Enzymes Flashcards
What are enzymes?
Enzymes are biological catalysts which speed up chemical reactions in cells
Why are enzymes specific?
The enzymes has an active size which is a specific shape, which will therefore only fit a specific substrate
Why is the rate of reaction low at low temperatures?
At low temperatures enzyme controlled reactions go slowly because the molecules have low kinetic energy
How could you keep safe in an experiment?
Wear goggles
Wear a lab coat
Tie your hair up
Wear gloves
Why is amylase affected by temperature?
The enzymes get more active with more temperature
How do you test for starch?
Add iodine solution which is red and see if it turns blue/black
Define denaturing
When the active site changes shape a reaction can no longer occur
How do you test for glucose?
Using Benedict’s solution it should change colour from blue to orange
