Cycles Within Ecosystems Flashcards
What carbon cycle?
Can be represented as a diagram that shows how the element carbon cycles in different forms between living organisms and the environment.
What is combustion?
Combustion means burning, such as the burning of fossil fuels.
What are denitrifying bacteria?
They are soil bacteria that convert nitrates in the soil to nitrogen gas which is released into the atmosphere.
What are fossil fuels?
Fuels formed from organic material, cub as peat coal and oil.
What are nitrifying bacteria?
Soil bacteria that convert ammonium ions to nitrite ions, and nitrite ions to nitrate ions, important in the nitrogen cycle.
What is the nitrogen cycle?
Can be represented as a diagram that shows how the element nitrogen cycles in different forms between living organisms and the environment.
What is nitrogen-fixing bacteria?
Bacteria found in the soil and in root nodules of some plants that can convert atmospheric nitrogen into a form of nitrogen that plants can use.
What is the water cycle?
Shows how water cycles between living organisms and the environment.
