Historically lay women who helped with child birth. Usually helped poor women
Now are an advanced practice

LDRP’s- labor, delivery, recover all in same room; rarely separate
Shorter hospital stay- 2 days vaginal, 4 days section
Definition of family
2 or more people who share emotional involvement and live in close geographical proximity
Nuclear family
Most common. Parents and kids live in same house
Extended family
Nuclear family and others related by blood- grandparents, aunts, uncles. Shares child rearing responsibility
Single parent family
Created by loss of spouse, divorce, death or choice
Binuclear family
Family after divorce where child is a member of both house holds
Reconstituted family
Family remarried after divorce, may include step parents or siblings
Family functions/ jobs of the family
Affection, socialization, reproduction, economic, healthcare/safety
How families see their role is determined by
Culture, religion, social economic status, developmental state
Cultural competence
Ability to think, feel, and act in ways that acknowledge, respect, and linguistic diversity
