Extensors of the Knee Flashcards
Rectus Femoris
O: straight head - anterior inferior iliac spine.
Reflected head - roughened area above the acetabulum of the innominate bone
I: upper border pf the patella, via the ligamentum patellae to the tibial tuberosity
N: femoral nerve L2, L3, L4
A: flexion of the hip & extension of the knee
Vastus lateralis
O: upper part of the intertrochanteric line, the lower border of the greater trochanter, lateral side of the gluteal tuberosity and the upper half of the lateral lip of the linea aspera of the femur.
I: base & lateral border of the patella, blending with rectus femoris
N: femoral nerve L2, L3, L4
Vastus Medialis
O: lower medial end of the intertrochanteric line, medial aspect of the end of the shaft on the spiral line, the medial lip of the linea apsera of the femur
I: upper 2/3rds of the medial supracondylar line, intermuscular septum and the tendon of adductor magnus
N: femoral nerve L2, L3, L4
A: extension of the knee and acts as a stabiliser
Vastus intermedius
O: upper 2/3rds of the anterior and lateral surface of the femur
I: base of the patella & blends with the deep aspect of the tendon of rectus femoris
N: femoral nerve L2, L3, L4
A: extension of the knee and acts as a stabiliser
Tensor Fascia Lata
O: anterior 1/3 of the outer lip of the iliac crest of the innominate bonde
I: blends into the illiotibial tract, which in turn inserts into the lateral aspect of the patella tendon/retinaculum and this the lateral aspect of the tibia
N: superior gluteal nerve L4, L5
A: flexion, abduction and medial rotation of the hip. Extension of the knee
