Parameters to examine
A
Colour Moisture- the mucus quality and quantity Membrane vessels- haemorrhages Surface- lesions, smoothness Capillary refill time CRT should be < 2 secs

Normal findings of mucus membranes
A
Light pink (not the case of normal pigmentation)
Smooth but conjunctiva slightly wrinkled
Shiny
Moist
Intact- no lesions
Blood vessels slightly recognised
CRT around 1 sec

Abnormal findings of mucus membranes
A
Pale- anaemia Yellow- jaundice Dull Livid Haemorrhage- patechia, suffusions, ecchymosis Dirty red- intoxication Cherry red- toxicosis Lesions e.g papules and ulcers Dry Sticky Injected Bluish/purple- cyanotic Greyish blue- hypovolaemic shock Chocolate brown- methaemoglobinaemia
