Exam Two: Cytokines Flashcards
What is the job of Chemical Messengers aka Signals?
They perform the job of relaying messages between cells. (example Insulin and Adrenaline)
What is the function of a cytokine?
to allow different immune cells to communicate with one another.
What is the function of a signal transduction pathway?
To induce the correct response from the message
What is an immune mediator?
A chemical signal in immunity ( protein, lipid, or carbohydrates)
What is the formal definition of a cytokine?
protein that act as chemical messengers in the immune system that have specific receptors
What is the formal definition of Chemokines?
They are a subset of Cytokines, that function as a chemoattractant. `
What is the function of a chemoattractant?
They attract white blood cells to a particular location
List the Primary Cytokines:
IL -1
IL-6
TNF
List the Cytokines associated with cell division:
IL- 2 and IL 3
What is the function of Interleukins?
They send messages between white blood cells
What is the function of Interferons?
Produced by virus-infected cells that interfere with infection of other cells = limit the spread of viruses
What is the Function of Tumor necrosis factor and Transforming growth factor beta?
Molecules that act on cancer cells but also play a essential role in the immune system.
TH1 T cell subset is induced by which Interferon?
Induced by Interferon gamma (y)
TH2 subset is induced by which Interleukins?
Interleukin-4 and 5
TReg cells are induced by what?
It induced by TGFB and IL-10
