Chapter 4: Immune Tolerance Flashcards
What is the lymphoid system?
The tissues involved in the production and circulation of lymphocytes (B and T cells)
What are the 2 lymphoid tissues?
the Central (primary lymphoid tissues and the Peripheral (secondary) lymphoid tissues
What is included in the central lymphoid tissues?
The Bone Marrow for B cells and the Thymus for T cells
What is the function of the central LT?
Generate lymphocytes
What is the primary function of the Peripheral LT?
Expose lymphocytes to antigen, where adaptive immune responses are initiated
What is included in the Peripheral LT?
The lymph nodes, spleen, and Mucosal-associated lymphoid tissues
What does the activation of helper T cell require?
- Antigen on MHC II
2. Costimulatory Signals
When do dendritic cells express co stimulatory signals
When it has been activated by pattern recognition receptors that indicate the presence of an infection
