Exam 4- Special Arterial Fluids Flashcards
There is no perfect version of this kind of fluid. Nothing will remove jaundice from the tissue. These fluids attempt to hide it by counter staining or bleaching.
Jaundice Fluids (Icterus Fluid)
To prevent the conversion of yellow bilirubin to green biliverdin or the production of some undesirable pigmentation during and following the embalming procedure.
Purpose of Jaundice (Icterus) Fluids
The higher the index of the solution:
The Greener the Tissue
- Vehicle
- Low HCHO content
- Reducing agent
- Bleaching agent
- Counter staining compound
- Non HCHO co-injection used in combination with special jaundice fluid- 2 step fluid.
Components of Jaundice Fluid
Usually under 15 index.
Low HCHO Content
Tanning agents plus penetrants.
Reducing Agent
Such as phenol and hydrogen peroxide.
Bleaching Agents
Usually an abundance of active dye. (Eosin is a common one used).
Counter Staining Compound
Utilize the femoral artery as an injection site with two drainage points (one above and one below the heart). This will allow for an even distribution of active dye to the face and hands. Be aware that many jaundice fluids are two-step or combination fluids mixed at use and sold as separate formulations.
General Rule- Jaundice (Icterus) Fluids
- Arterial fluid with dyes
- Bleaching Agent
Two separate bottles.
Two Steps: Jaundice Fluids
Always read the ____ for two step jaundice fluids.
Directions
- Those with an abundance of red active dye, usually Eosin.
- Those with an abundance of bleaching chemicals that appear to be clear or amber in color.
Two Classification of Jaundice Fluids
This is the type of bulb used when using indrect lighting via torchiere lamps for Jaundiced cases.
Red Muggle Bulbs
Don’t assume that because the fluid has a low index that it is weak. Other ingredients will make up the difference in strength. “Leather Tanning Acid.”
“Jaundice”
Methods to Correct:
- Massage cream and massage
- Apply cold water on face with hose during injection.
Circulation Problems in the Face, Spots Green and Red
Switch bulbs to white light and add powder or use purple dimmer lights.
If Face and Hands are Red
High index and a low pH (high acidity)
Cause of Conversion of Bilirubin to BIliverdin
This is the primary concern for embalming a jaundice case.
Preservation
Fluids with an unusually high content of preservative and germicides, usually bolstered by ethanol.
High Index Fluid (Special Preservation Fluid) 30-40 Index
Used to treat the following:
- Edema (anasarca)
- Drowning
- Obese cases
- Decomposition
- Restorative art
- Holding remains for long periods prior to disposition; should mix a humectant to minimize dehydration.
Purpose of High Index Arterial Fluid (Special Preservative Fluid)
- High HCHO content (30-40 index)
- More anticoagulants than usual
- More germicides than usual
Components of High Index Arterial Fluid (Special Preservative Fluids)
Over dehydration- parted eyelids and lips, shriveled finger tips, HCHO gray in surface tissue.
Danger Of High Index Arterial Fluids
