analgesic
pain relieving
antipyretic
decrease body temperature
anti-inflammatory
decrease inflammation
nonopiod analgesics:

- non salicylate
- non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS)
examples of salicylates
- aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid or ASA)
- Bayer, Ecotrin, Anacin
aspirin woman became the new anti-power:
- Anti-inflammatory
- Anti-pain
- Anti-pyretic
- Anti-platelet aggregation
when taking aspirin, watch for
- bleeding tendencies
- tinnitus
- stomach pain
- thrombocytopenia
salicylates action
-Analgesic and anti-inflammatory action due to inhibition of prostaglandins
(Lower Temp by dilating peripheral blood vessels = cools body)
ASA as anticoagulant
–Inhibits aggregation of platelets
(Important for MI and stroke patients)
–Prolong bleeding time =risk for bleeding
Salicylates allergic reactions
hives, bronchospasm and anaphylaxis
Salicylism
toxicity from repeated admin of large doses (reversible with dose reduction)
S&S of salicylism:
- Tinnitus, Impaired Hearing
- Mental confusion, lassitude
- Sweating, tachycardia
salicylates contraindications:
- known hypersensitivity to Salicylates or NSAIDS
- bleeding disorders or tendencies
Children and Teens with flu or chickenpox should not salicylate take due to association with -
Reyes Syndrome (life threatening) -> Vomiting, lethargy, progressing to coma
antacids may ___ the effect of Salicylates
decrease
Aspirin may ____ risk of bleeding during _____ administration
increase; heparin
Admin with NSAIDS may ____ NSAID blood levels
increase
