Exam 1 - integumentary system Flashcards
integumentary system consists of
the skin, and many associated smaller, specialized organs (glands and hair follicles)
what are the two layers in
epidermis and dermis
epidermis:
made of epithelial tissue that is keratinized (tough protein) - has a rough superficial layer that provides protection
has a basal layer, or a deep layer
does the epidermis have blood vessels
no it is avascular - but does contain a few nerve endings
dermis
made of connective tissue made of interlacing elastic and collagen fibers that provide strength and tone
does the dermis have blood vessels
yes, very vascular and well supplied with nerve endings
sensitive to pain, touch, and temp
what is deep to the dermis
subcutaneous tissue (superficial fascia) consisting of loose connective tissue and stored fat —– used for padding and insulation
also contains sweat glands, sensory receptors. blood vessels
hair fillicule
located in the dermis
produce hairs and regulates hair growth
arrector (arrector pilli) muscles
contraction erects the hair and causes goose bumps
sweat glands
in the dermis
produce watery secretion, the evaporation which helps with heat loss
sebaceous gland
in the dermis
secrete an oily product into the skin and hair
sensory receptors….. and example
Meissner corpuscles - sensory receptor high in the dermis (can detect a fly walking on the skin)
detecs light touch
arterioles
dialation and constriction promotes heat loss or retention
integementry system functions
protection
containment of body tissue, organs, and fluids
thermoregulation
sensation
systhesis and storage of vitamin D
