Exam 1 - Tissues Flashcards
tissue
organized recognizable collection of cell plus material (called matrix) between cells that function as a unit
may be thought of as fabrics that are used to construct organs
4 basic tissue types
epithelial tissue, connective tissue, muscle tissue, nervous tissue
epithelium is made from
outer layer of skin
cells are closely packed with very little intracellular matrix
what does epithelial tissue form
coverings and linings of the body surface, cavities, and hollow organs.
it is the major tissue in many glands
how is the epithelium attached
epithelial cells have one free surface that is not in contact with other cells.
opposite of the free surface, the cells are attached to underlying connective tissue by a basement membrane
what is the function of the epithelium
protection, secretion, absorption, and filtration
connective tissue is made from
abundance of intercellular matrix with cells that are widely spaced
matrix will contain collagenous, elastic, and reticular fibers
what does the connective tissue do
binds structures together, forms a framework, and supports organs and the body as a whole
also stores fat, transports substances, protects against disease, amd helps repair tissue damage
the three types of cartilage
hyaline cartilage
fibrocartilage
elastic cartilage
hyaline cartilage
found in ribs, nose, larynx, trachea– precursor to bone tissue
fibrocartilage
very strong found in the intervertebral disc, joint capsule, and ligaments
elastic cartilage
plays a role in elasticity of an organ
found in the external ear, epiglottis, and larynx
muscle tissue
made of long slender cells called muscle fibers
have the ability to contract (shorten) in order to produce a movement
nervous tissue
made of electrically excitable cells called neurons that are specialized to produce electrical “impulses” (communication signals)
a variety of supporting cells called neuroglia (glial cells)
where is nervous tissue found
brain, spinal cord, nerves
