Epistemology: 7. 'Dr Jones' Case Against No False Lemmas. Flashcards
What is Zagzebski’s Gettier Case against no false lemmas? explain in depth.
-Dr. Jones has very good evidence that her patient, Smith, is suffering from virus X, based on consistent symptoms and lab tests
- However, Smith actually has an unknown virus Y, and by chance, has just caught virus X, which hasn’t shown up in lab tests.
-Therefore, Dr. Jones’ belief that Smith has virus X is true and justified, but she does not know it because her evidence is misleading.
Do children and animals have knowledge (accoring to the no flase lemmas theory)?
-Yes, on average, we tend to think they do, but not according to this theory
-However, if we require JTB+N for knowledge, it complicates the assertion that children and animals possess knowledge, as they often cannot accurately justify what they know, especially in cases of misinformation.
why does the Dr jones case not have any flase lemmas?
-Condition 4 (no false lemmas clause) is satisfied.
-All evidence is true – Smith does manifest the symptoms he does, and the lab reports are accurate.
- Only the diagnosis is false.
-So, Dr Jones did not infer her true and justified belief that Smith has virus X from any false belief, yet it is still not knowledge
