Q

What is the first Gettier Case?

A

The first Gettier Case involves a character Smith who holds the proposition ‘the person with 10 coins in his pocket will get the job’. This proposition is justified because he was told that Jones will get the job and he counted the coins in Jones’ pocket. It is also what he believes because the justification was persuading to him. And it is true because Smith himself will get the job and also has 10 coins in his own pocket.

Q

What gap exists in the first Gettier Case?

A

There is a gap between why the justification is justified and what is true, so we would not call this knowledge.

Q

What does Gettier’s paper teach us?

A

Q

What implication does Gettier’s paper have on the tripartite definition of knowledge?

A

It implies that mistakes are entirely possible with the tripartite definition, and it is not a complete definition.

Q

What does Zagzebski say about definitions?

A

Zagzebski states that a definition should be inseparable from the thing it is defining. So, if you don’t have a correct definition, you need a new one!

Q

Outline Gettier’s Conclusion to his famous paper?

A

Gettier’s conclusion is that the tripartite definition for knowledge is not sufficient for knowledge because it’s possible to have the necessary conditions for knowledge without having knowledge.
