Endocrine and Nervous system Flashcards
What does the sensory neuron do?
- it detects change in either the internal or external environment
What are the 3 times of neurons?
- Sensory/Affector neurons
- connecting/inter neurons
- motor/effector neuron
What do inter neurons do?
It connects sensory and motor neurons together which is located in the CNS
What do motor/effector neurons do?
- the neuron from the CNS to muscle/cells/glands , which cause them to respond
Function of the myelin sheath?
Assists in the transmission of impulses along the neuron
What does the CNS consist of?
brain and spinal cord
What does the PNS consist of?
Extends to the rest of the body
What is the reflex arc?
- automatic and rapid response to the stimulus
What is the synapse?
- the gap between neurons
What is a neurotransmitter ?
A chemical which carries the impulse across the gap
What type of signals does the endocrine system rely on?
Chemical signals
What type of signals does the nervous system rely on?
Electrical signals
What does the feedback model consist of?
- stimulus
- receptor
- effector
- response
What is a stimulus?
A change in the internal or external environment
What is a receptor?
Part of the nervous system that is responsible for detecting changes
What is an effector ?
Muscle or gland capable of producing a response to a stimulus
What is a response ?
A change in a cells, tissue or organism because of a stimulus
What is positive feedback?
A response to the effector continues to reinforce the condition causing a stimulus
What is negative feedback?
Involves nervous and hormonal systems , to promote stability of the internal environment
What are target cells?
- any cell that has a specific receptor for an hormone
What does insulin do?
Lowers blood glucose levels
What does glucagon do?
It acts of the liver to increase blood glucose levels
